One of the first assignments in my graphic communications curriculum at Clemson was
to come up with a design for a set of stickers and print them on a small press.
For this particular project, the design was secondary to the technical side of
creating the plates and operating the press. But I thought I’d try and have some fun with the design
anyway and come up with something unique anyway.
Armadillos were on my mind since I had just come back from visiting my parents
who were living in Texas. Also, Red Stripe beer had a commercial at the time with the tagline “hooray
beer!” Somehow, I saw the potential for a mashup of these two very unrelated things and so hooray
armadillo™ was born!
The design had a cult following among my classmates and it turned into a running joke for the next four
years where I would attempt to work it into every assignment somehow. After college I adopted it as a logo of sorts, alterting the original design a bit to match a more modern aesthetic.
